The Human Cost of ICE Enforcement
I want to tell you about three people.
The first is my client, Godfrey Wade. I represented him as an immigration attorney. He was deported without due process, no fair hearing, no real chance to make his case, just removed. That’s not justice. That’s not the rule of law our country claims to stand for. It’s the opposite.
The second is a mother in Georgia. She was breastfeeding her infant when ICE detained her. They chained her to a bench. Let that sit with you for a moment, a mother, restrained like a criminal, separated from her child, because our immigration system has stopped treating people like human beings and started treating them like numbers to process.
The third is Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. He was murdered in front of his family and his coworkers in Houston by ICE. And now ICE is refusing to let Houston authorities even investigate his death. Think about that. A man is dead, his family watched it happen, and the agency responsible won’t let local law enforcement do their job and find out what happened; it’s reported ICE is working to deport the only witnesses to the homicide as fast as they can.
This is what “enforcement” looks like right now in the United States of America. Not safety. Not order. Cruelty, dressed up as policy.
I didn’t get into this race because I woke up one day and decided I wanted to be a politician. I got into this race because Rich McCormick supports these policies and so much more that is making Georgians poorer, sicker, and less safe. He’s had his chance. He’s shown us who he fights for, and it isn’t the families in GA-07. It isn’t the mothers, the workers, the small business owners, the veterans. The only person Rich McCormick makes richer is himself, and the only person he answers to is President Donald Trump.
Georgia’s 7th can’t afford another two years of that. We need representation now!
I spent years as a Naval Aviator, defending this country. I spent years as an immigration attorney, defending families like Godfrey’s. Now I’m asking to defend this district in Congress, to bring some basic decency and accountability back to how our government treats people.
When we win this November, I’ll be the first Latino ever elected to Congress from Georgia. That matters to me deeply, and I know it matters to so many of you reading this. But more than the history, what matters is what we do with it - fighting for a Georgia where due process actually means something, where no mother is chained to a bench, and where families don’t have to bury someone because an agency refused to be held accountable.
I’m proud to stand with GALEO Impact Fund. I’m proud of this fight. And I need you in it with me.
